Who has never used a CD to hold data, music or even computer software? You must be a crook if you have never; but better yet, further inane if you don’t know how they handle their crap! They are so cheap, that it is easy to produce them as long as you have a computer CD-R drive. A CD can store up to 74 minutes of music, yeah….my crunk mix CD plays for about 74minutes…let me hope yours does for approximately the same approximate length of time.

Let us do the math now

44,100 samples/channel/second×2bytes/sample ×2channels ×74minutes ×60 seconds/minute=783,216,000bytes

To carry 783MB on to a 12cm diameter CD….huh…bytes must then be very small.

Let’s get physical

Most part of a CD is an injection-molded piece of clear polycarbonate plastic. At manufacture, the plastic is impressed with microscopic bumps organized as a single, continuous and extremely long spiral track of data. A thin reflective aluminium layer is then sputtered on it to cover the bumps, then a thin acrylic layer sprayed over for protection.

What holds my data?

A CD has one spiral track of data circling from inner (center) to the outermost part, this can be less than 12cm in diameter if you want it to be! Infact there are plastic baseball cards and business cards put in a CD that hold about 2MB data before the size and shape of the card cuts off the spiral. Haa….this shit is funny, the data track is only 0.5microns (hope you know what a micron is-a millionth of a meter)  wide, does it even deserve the term wide….? 1.6 microns separate one track to another. What about the little bumps….they are even tinier, each 0.5microns wide, a minimum of 0.83 microns long and 125nm (a nm is abillionth of a meter) high. Take note that if someone tells you those are pits just turn the CD and show him the bumps, as in they appear like pits on one side and like bumps on the other side.

Then how is this small spiral track read?

The CD player reads data stored as bumps on the CD. It has three basic components

  • Drive motor to spin the disc. Is precisely controlled to rotate between 200 and 500RPM depending on the track being read.
  • A laser and a lens system tofocus in, on and read the bumps.

  • A tracking assembly that moves the laser assembly so that the beam can follow the track and resolutions. The data is then processed into understandable data blocks and send to the DAC (in audio CD players) or to the computer (CD-ROM).

The main job of the CD player is to focus the laser on the track of bumps. The laser beam passes through the polycarbonate layer, reflects  off the aluminium layer and hits an opto-electronic device that detects the alterations in light phases upon reflection by the different surfaces . The bumps reflect light that differs with flats (aluminium layer) and the opto-electronic sensor reads these alterations in reflectivity from crest to trough and back as bits that finally constitute the bytes. The tracking beam that keeps the laser beam centered on the data track has a hell of a job to do…coz it has to move with the layer continuously outwards, as the bumps move fast, the laser even goes faster(v=wr). So, as the laser moves outward, the spindle motor must slow down the CD for bumps to travel past the laser at constant speed and the data comes off the disk at a constant rate.

DLNA streaming

DLNA is the short form for Digital Living Network Alliance. It a standard for moving movies, photos, music and other media from one device to another. DLNA servers can store media in one location and, without any setup or configuration, can stream it to other DLNA compliant players, like the PS3. Its main purpose is to create an easier way for consumers to get media from one device to another.

To get started, you must find a server for your network. You can either use a Network Attached Storage, NAS, device to store all of our media in one place or use a PC with Window Media Center. This should enable all other computers and even players in the house to access the files and play them on one favourable output device like the TV. The good thing about NAS devices, despite being more expensive, is that it saves your PC from just staying connected to the server. It’s the device that connects directly to the server. Just about upcoming phones in the market, the iphone 4 has hit with nicks. Now let’s focus on the Motorola Droid X, with a unique feature that the iphone 4 lacks. Even though we will be in the dark about it’s piece of the mistakes cake till it dawns on us on July 15th, its features whet my appetite and leave me drooling for it. 4.3 inch display, flash 10.1 support, DLNA streaming, Built in WiFi hotspot (3G Mobile Hotspot)…….Just a tip of the iceberg.

iPhone 4: inequality!

To hell with iphone4..if you have one just forgive me. I mean the new iphone 4! But that’s just what a left handed iPhone 4 owner would greet Steve Jobbs with. It favors the right handed people only and would lose it’s reception capacity when handled with a left hand. I know you could be wondering how…. Many organizations have scolded the apple company for the antenna flaw that insinuated that the apple company maybe did not have left handed expertise in their design workforce…..or maybe they are there but assumed that their wonderful product looked superb when right handled.

It is now clear that Apple will not recall the already bought iphone 4 models. However, it is advising consumers not to put their hand in a way to cover the antenna coz it diminishes the signal and call quality. It has also releases a bumper for users who feel uncomfortable having a taper to cover that antenna to prevent connection interferences- crazy? Right? There is a rumor that there is something to do with hardware repairs to come, this is not yet confirmed.

Jail-breaking is no longer illegal!

We have finally woken up to the good news that hacking a phone to enable you change it's softwares to suit your need is not wrong. This is a ruling from the US copyrights office that have had the largest criticism from Apple which says that it infringes and violates the company's rights. In a letter presented to feds, Apple raises concerns that most of the complains that customers raise to their related department are due to functionality problems as a result of the practice. Still, its the right step to take and we are happy about it coz it is better to have the software you like than the imposed one....talk about our money...what we like...our freedom.

The Folio 100

I am talking about the newly released Folio 100 that actually looks like the  Apple's iPad, the most common ones.

Toshiba Folia 100

The Folio will cost about kshs. 40,000 for the Wi-Fi networking version while the 3G version will go for about 48,000 bob. It has a 10.1-inch multitouch screen with 1024x600-pixel resolution, an Nvidia Tegra processor, stereo speakers, a 1.3-megapixel Webcam, two USB ports, an SD card slot, an HDMI connector for sending video to other screens, Bluetooth communications, and 16GB memory.

It weighs 760 grams.....nearly the same as an iPad with 3G and its battery lasts seven hours when being used 65 percent for Web browsing, 10 percent watching videos, and 25 percent idling, according to Toshiba.

Besides the limitless list of Android applications available, the Folio 100 also comes with the Opera Mobile Web browser, the FBReader e-book reader software, Documents To Go for productivity suite, Evernote for taking notes, Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 for running Flash apps, and Fring for video chat....already installed!
